WILLIAMS, Ariz. — The Williams Sportsman's Club (WSC) hosted a successful Ladies Only Shoot May 15, with 30 ladies participating in the event. This recurring event is tailored to provide women who have little to no handgun experience an opportunity to learn about and practice safe firearms use. The 30 ladies received a comprehensive day of academics and supervised range shooting. First stop was the city of Williams Recreation Center for a morning classroom instruction in safe firearms handling procedures that included hands on demonstrations of various types of firearms by WSC member Chuck Corcoran. Next, they all enjoyed a complimentary lunch provided by WSC “Chef” Ernie Hernandez before heading off to the Williams Shooting Range for an afternoon of some practical experience with their own firearms. WSC Range Safety Officers/Instructors were there to assist them with the goal of providing a safe, no pressure, no embarrassment, comfortable environment to build basic skills and confidence with their pistols. Numerous rounds were fired downrange on paper targets. The day’s event concluded with the ladies ringing steel gongs and knocking down metal silhouettes with AR-15 style .22 rimfire rifles. When asked what made the long drive worth it, for some of them, they said first time shooting opportunities specifically orientated for ladies are difficult to find. The Williams Sportsman’s Club operates the shooting range, which is located west of State Route 64, just north of Interstate 40. It is open for member’s use 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday, Saturday and the first and third Sundays of each month. The public is encouraged to visit, they may shoot once for a requested $5 donation, and if someone wants full access, they may join for a nominal fee.
