Ash Fork’s Branson Milius throws no-hitter

ASH FORK, Ariz. — Branson Milius, a sophomore, threw a no-hitter March 20 en route to a 13-0 shutout over St. Michaels.

Milius threw 13 strikeouts and allowed only two hits.

Milius also led the Spartans offensively with three Runs Batted In, including a triple. Teammate Gabriel Mueller drove in two RBI. John Cauthen tallied a double and two singles in the win, and Evan Maestas and Mueller both had a triple.

In the bottom of the double-header, Jesus Ayala took over on the mound and threw six strikeouts, allowed five hits and only two runs in the 19-2 rout. Senior Andres Santoyo drove in three RBI and added three stolen bases to his total for the year. Cauthen also stole three bases, and hammered out four hits, including three singles and a double. Victor Ayala and Milius each had a triple. Jhovanny Vazquez contributed three singles, Ricky Faires tallied two singles, Mueller added a double, and Miclo Ayala had a single in the win.

"We're a young team," Coach Sonny Martin said. "Our defense improves every game."

On March 25, the Spartans added two more in the win column, when they swept Mayer in a non-regional double-header at home. In the first game, the Spartans cruised past the Wildcats 14-4. Milius started on the mound and threw 95 pitches. Ayala came in late in the game and threw five pitches to finish out the contest.

Mayer had five pitchers on the mound, who totaled 143 pitches in the first game.

Ayala started the second half of the double header, and threw 79 pitches in the 16-1 victory. Mayer sent three pitchers to the mound who threw a total of 114 pitches.

The Spartans are No. 2 in the 1A North Region with a 2-0 regional mark. Their overall record is 7-2.

April 4, the Spartans travel to Rock Point to take on the Red Mesa Redskins in a regional double-header. Games will be played at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
