FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. —The body of a 25-year-old man who drowned at Lake Mary last week has been recovered.

On Sept. 4, at 6:45 p.m., Flagstaff Emergency Dispatch received a call reporting a drowning victim on the south end of Upper Lake Mary Narrows, south of the city of Flagstaff. Initial reports indicated the man was riding in a kayak and did not know how to swim, nor was he wearing a life jacket. The victim fell from the kayak and did not resurface.

Minutes after receiving the 911 call, deputies arrived on scene and immediately began searching the water utilizing kayaks from parties on scene as well as wading/swimming into the water themselves in search of the victim. The Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team was mobilized and continued search efforts late into the evening hours with no success in locating the victim. Due to environmental conditions and the safety of personnel, search efforts were ceased through the evening hours. Further coordination efforts were established with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team.

On the afternoon of Sept. 5, Maricopa County Dive team members recovered the body.

Family members have asked that the man’s name is not released.
