Lady Vikings beat Mogollon in three straight sets

WILLIAMS, Ariz. —The Lady Vikes took on No. 3 1A state-ranked Mogollon, and scored a major upset when they defeated the Mustangs in straight sets at home Oct.21. The Lady Vikings won 25-21, 25-14 and 25-15.

“I’m very pleased with the way my team has been pulling it together,” Williams High School Volleyball Coach Connie Stevens said. “We just keep getting stronger and stronger. This is a great way to go into the super regional tournament this week, and state the next week. With the way the Lady Vikes are playing, I have every expectation to be in the championship game this Saturday.”

Stevens is understandably proud of her team’s progress, and is confident they’ll advance to the 1A state championship rounds in two weeks.

Kai Mortensen had an excellent game. The lone team senior tallied 12 kills, six blocks, and 13 passes. Kyleigh Amos had nine kills and Miranda Chaney added six kills to the offensive efforts. Faith Jensen topped all servers with 18 serves including one ace and 13 points. Daizy Vazquez was right behind with 17 serves, three aces and 12 points. Setter Adilene Martinez led the assists with 23.

Defensively, Amos led the team with 14 digs. The defense was well balanced with five players: Orozco, Jensen, Vazquez, Mortensen and Laynie Johnson all contributing 13 digs apiece. Amos and Mortensen led in serve receives at 12 and 10, respectively.

For the regional tourney, Williams has a first-round bye Oct. 24. They will host the winner of the match between St. Michaels and Seligman Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. The winner of that match will face either Rock Point, Fredonia or Shonto Prep and advance to the semi finals. The semi final matchup could be between the 2022 state champions, Rock Point, and the 2022 runner up, Williams.

The other semi final match could feature No. 1 El Capitan from the 1A Canyon Region and either Red Mesa or Ash Fork. The first semi final match will be played at Rehoboth at noon. The second semi final match will be between El Capitan and either Red Mesa or Ash Fork.

The winners will play at Rehoboth at 4:30 p.m. Both teams will advance to the state shampionship rounds the following week.

In earlier action, WHS trounced the Seligman Antelopes in three sets on the road Oct. 20 The scores were 25-12, 25-6 and 25-18.
