Vikings volleyball back after successful 2022-23 season
WILLIAMS, Ariz. — Last year was definitely the year for the Lady Vikings volleyball team. They blazed through the regular season, and wound up in second place at the 1A state tournament. Then, six seniors graduated.
This year, it's back to basics for the WHS high school team. Only two members of last year's team, senior Kai Mortenson, this year's team captain, and Kyleigh Amos, a junior, are on the roster this season.
"It's a new beginning," Head Coach Connie Stevens said. "At times, these girls show real potential. I'm pleased with them. We're practicing fundamentals, for many of the girls this is their first experience playing volleyball for me."
"At the recent Camp Verde tournament, they took first place in the silver bracket. The next day, we were up and down. I'm very excited about our freshmen team. Some of them will have to step up and play varsity slots."
Team composition at this point is one senior, Mortenson, seven juniors including Amos, six sophomores, and nine freshmen.
Since the team has had only limited practice, only two positions have been set. Mortenson will fill the outside hitter spot, and Amos is the middle blocker.
The opening match of the season is at home on Saturday, Aug. 26, against last year's 1A State Champion, Rock Point. Starting time is 1 p.m.
