“This has been a long time coming and was something we looked at over many months,” said Tusayan Town Manager Charlie Hendrix. “I think we’ve really had a movement over the course of the last year to make sure we’re connecting services with the community we serve.”
According to Hendrix, the program stemmed from a need for media access within the community.
“As we researched it, we realized that most communities have an outlet for citizens to go to the library to check out or at least access their local media and we did not have that resource here,” she said.
Through discussions with Williams-Grand Canyon News and with the support of town council and the mayor, the town was able to make that access available. There are currently a total of 25, one-year subscriptions available for check out.
“What’s exciting about that is as we did that research we found other things that other communities make available to their community members,” Hendrix said. “They make all sorts of things available through their library services — hot spot internet, culture passes, plants and seeds. So we’ve developed the TOT pass.”
The TOT Services Pass allows patrons access to a variety of services — the newspaper is the first option available through the pass.
Those wanting to access the newspaper will have the option of checking out a digital or print subscription.
“We’re really excited to be able to meet demand in multiple formats,” Hendrix said. “We have community members of all different ages and interest levels.”
Starting June 10, in recognition of the Community Garden Day, the library will also offer plants for checkout through the TOT pass.
“Community members will be able to check them out and use them at the community garden and if supply allows, they will be able to take them home,” Hendrix said. “We’re really excited about it, with the limited space people have here self-sufficient living has been very difficult.”
Additional services through the pass will be announced at a later date.
