Man dies after jump from interstate overpass near Flagstaff
BELLEMONT, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a man has died after jumping from an interstate overpass about 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of Flagstaff despite the efforts of two teenagers who tried to stop him.
Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves says the teens were driving in the area Monday morning and saw the man on the overpass.
Graves says two teens got out of their car and pleaded with the man not to jump and tried to physically restrain him before he jumped to his death.
Graves says authorities are working to contact the man's family before releasing his identity.
Eastbound traffic on Interstate 40 had to be rerouted by authorities through the Bellemont exit around 7:30 a.m. Monday as the incident was going on. The interstate reopened at 11 a.m.
