Community wellness meeting Sept. 8

Grand Canyon National Park is holding a community wellness meeting Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Community Building. The park invites all members of the Grand Canyon community to the first community meeting. The goal of the meeting is to hear input on what community members feel will enhance our community. The committee seeks to enhance the quality of life for all park residents and hopes to foster a more cohesive community by identifying community needs and goals. They will be working across all entities to develop a strategic plan for continual improvement while growing existing community programs. Grand Canyon School Board meet and greet Sept. 14

On Sept. 14 Grand Canyon School District ivites family and friends to a meet and greet for the Grand Canyon School Board Meeting. The meeting will take place at the Tusayan Town Hall in Tusayan from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. followed by a regular meeting from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Grand Canyon Music Festival Aug. 25 - Sept. 10

The 33rd annual Grand Canyon Music Festival will take place Aug. 25 - Sept. 10 at the Shrine of the Ages auditorium in Grand Canyon Village. The festival kicks off with performances by the Catalyst Quartet performing the world premiere of Puhutawi, a new genre of Hopi music, taking the power and sophistication of Hopi traditional music and expanding its sonic possibilities via fusion with contemporary chamber music. Additional musicians include The Bonfiglio Group, Sweet Plantain and micro-operas composed by young Native composers during The Stories We Tell, in collaboration with the Arizona Opera and Heard Museum. Mainstage concerts take place at 7:30 p.m. at Shrine of the Ages. The Aug. 25 Puhutawi Concert will take place at the Desert View Watch Tower and is free and open to the public. Rotary community grants available

The Grand Canyon Rotary Club is currently offering fall community grants, $500 each. Rotary awards grants to non-profit organizations for programs and projects that benefit the Grand Canyon/Tusayan communities. Rotary members ask applicants to write a brief letter describing their needs by Sept. 20. Winners will be invited to a Rotary Club meeting to present on their program and how the money is being used. Colorado River Days Sept. 2-12

The annual Colorado River Days celebration will be held Sept. 2-12 in various locations around Flagstaff. This year's event will feature concerts, a local art exhibit, family education events and hikes, and a keynote lecture from Kevin Fedarko, Rich Rudow and Chris Atwood about their end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon and the threats to its natural beauty. Line Dance Classes Sept. 5 - Oct. 3

The Grand Canyon Recreation Center will be offering free line dance classes every Monday beginning at 6 p.m. More information is available from the Rec Center at (928) 638-3398.

Grand Canyon North Rim Camping

The Grand Canyon Recreation Center will be offering a North Rim camping trip Sept. 5-7. The cost is $50 per person. For more information or to sign up, contact the Rec Center at (928) 638-3398.

Friday night movie Sept. 9

On Friday, Sept. 9 the Grand Canyon Rec Center will show a free movie in the Multi-Purpose Room. The movie starts at 7 p.m. This week's featured movie is "The Huntsman: Winter's War" (Rated PG-13) starring Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain and Charlize Theron. Enjoy this recently released DVD movie on the Rec Center's 14' wide screen. Free lemonade and popcorn will be served to the audience.

CPR courses Sept. 12

The Tusayan Fire Department will be offering CPR courses at 10 a.m. Sept. 12 at the Tusayan fire house. Three seats are currently available. Please contact firefighter Tim Leija by Sept. 9 to sign up.

Community Volleyball

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Grand Canyon Rec Center eveyone is ivinted to join in free games of community volleyball. Play begins at 6 p.m. on the sand volleyball court at the Rec Center

Holistic Lifestyle coaching

Rob Gerard, a strength and lifestyle coach is offering free holistic lifestyle coaching to members and non-members of the Grand Canyon Rec Center. According to Gerard the way in which we choose to eat, sleep, exercise, go outdoors, have fun, manage stress and connect to others matter. Acro Yoga

Acro Yoga is an informal class combining yoga and acrobatics to create an uplifting experience. Classes are offered Mondays at 9 a.m. and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at the Grand Canyon Recreation Center.
