Williams Majors All-Stars go down swinging
Majors baseball 9-10 and 11-12 All-Star teams face tough opponents in first games of tournaments
WILLIAMS, Ariz. - The Williams boys Little League baseball teams faced stiff competition in the first rounds of the All-Star tournaments June 30.
The 11-12 All-Star team faced Verde Valley June 30 in Cottonwood and lost 18-2.
Jason Olson was the sole Williams player to get on base in the first inning and was left stranded.
Verde Valley came out with a bang in the bottom of the first with their first player hitting an out of the park homerun on the third pitch of the inning. However, Williams kept the team at one run before getting back at bat.
Williams had no hits in the second, but Verde Valley took off and pulled in six runs in the inning.
Williams struggled again in the third and Verde Valley scored another six runs to pull ahead 12-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Olson and Jesse Howell got the first two outs of the inning with popups to third and right field respectively, but the team did not give up. Preston Ford singled to short stop and Angel Serrato followed with another single to short. Ford and Serrato stole bases and Jesus Salazar kept the momentum going with a walk to first.
With the bases loaded, Jesse Hernandez launched a centerfield double that brought in Ford and Serrato to put Williams on the board. However, the short rally ended with a strikeout. The umpire declared the game over with the fourth inning 10-run rule and Verde Valley took the win.
The 9-10 All-Star team trekked to Wickenburg to face Chino Valley in their first game of the tournament June 30 but came home with a 16-6 loss.
The Williams 11-12 All-Star team next played Chino Valley July 1 in Verde Valley and the Williams 9-10 All-Star team played July 5, after the News went to press.
