Celebrate Black History Month March 18

Grand Canyon National Park and the Kaibab National Forest will host former-professional football player, Ironman tri-athlete and host of the radio talk show Fitness Friday, Darryl Haley for a special evening program in honor of Black History Month on March 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Shrine of the Ages in Grand Canyon National Park. GCS Sex Education Forums March 26 - 27

Grand Canyon School (GCS) will host community forums regarding impending sex education lessons on March 26 at 6 p.m. and March 27 at 11 a.m. The forums will be held at GCS in the band room. The forum is an opportunity for parents/guardians to voice their questions or concerns for the school to pass on to the county instructor who will be teaching the sex-education lessons. Students in grades 7-10 will have the opportunity to obtain sex education lessons offered at GCS by the Public Health Services District of Coconino County, the week of May 11-14. PowerPoint presentations outlining the County's lessons can be found for grades 7-8 and for grades 9-10 on the school's website at www.grandcanyonschool.org

Sedona day hike March 26

On March 26 Grand Canyon Recreation Center will take a day hike to Sedona. Those interested can meet in the Rec. center lobby at 7:45 a.m. The trip costs $20 per person and will need to be paid in advance to reserve a seat. Enjoy the colors in the greater Sedona area with a hike on one of the many trails in this area. Trip fee covers transportation and park entrance fee. Be sure to bring your I.D., water bottle, good hiking shoes, lunch and/or spending money. More information is available from the Rec. Center at 928-638-3389.

Lions Club rummage sale April 4

On April 4 the Lions Club will hold a rummage sale at the Grand Canyon Recreation Center's multi-purpose room from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Grand Canyon Hiking Club

The Grand Canyon Hiking Club (GCHC) invites everyone to join the club, the club's purpose is to encourage local residents to improve their fitness/wellness levels while gaining a deeper appreciation of the natural resources where they live and work.

Those club members who complete 100 miles in accordance to club guidelines will receive a commemorative certificate of accomplishment and a "100 Mile" hiking club t-shirt. Completed log sheet(s) will need to be turned into the Grand Canyon Recreation Center office at the end of your season and before Oct. 1. More information is available from the Rec. Friday Night movies

On March 27 Grand Canyon Recreation Center will be showing "The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies" (Rated PG-13) starring Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage and Ian McKellen.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy this recently released DVD movie on the Rec. Center's 14 foot wide screen T.V. Free lemonade and popcorn will be served to the viewing audience.

Grand Canyon School Boxtops for Education

Grand Canyon School is collecting Boxtops for Education and Campbell's Soup Labels for Education. The program is sponsored by Kellogg's products with each redeemed label worth between 10 cents to over a dollar. The money earned by the program helps purchase school supplies and equipment. Submission dates are May 30 and Nov. 1. Please save, cut and bring labels to Mrs. Lori Rommel at the Grand Canyon School office or to the following drop off sites: Kaibab Learning Center, Grand Canyon Recreation Center, Delaware North and Xanterra Human Resource office. Open gym basketball every Sunday

Every Sunday of the month Grand Canyon Recreation Center offers open gym basketball. The free event is open to the public with pick-up games beginning at 7 p.m. at the Grand Canyon School gym. The public is welcome to join in playing full-court basketball games each Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. with other Grand Canyon and Tusayan community members. The gym requests players have clean gym shoes in order to participate.

Violin and piano lessons

Rachel Dryer is offering violin lessons to anyone interested in learning to play. Lessons are $15 for half hour lessons. She has played the violin for 15 years and teaches the Suzuki method. Grand Canyon Yoga

An all level yoga class, taught by Jennifer Allen, meets from 5:45 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday nights at the Grand Canyon Recreation Center, 2 Mohave Street Grand Canyon.

Zumba with Haley

Zumba with Haley is a free dance class. Zumba meets at the Grand Canyon Recreation Center every Monday from 7 p.m. from 9 p.m. Zumba is a Latin inspired dance fitness program. Participants should bring exercise clothes and water.

Yongshidao Self Defense Class

Learn how to defend yourself with Mater Michael Martinez at his Yongshidao self defense class. The class is free and meets twice a week, Sundays and Tuesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Grand Canyon Recreation Center, 2 Mohave Street Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon Lions Club District D21

The Lions club meet the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Canyon Plaza Resort, 406 Canyon Plaza Lane Tusayan.

Grand Canyon chapter of AA

Grand Canyon chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the Kachina Room of Kachina Lodge at the Grand Canyon. Meetings for the group, which has been in existence at the Grand Canyon for 15 years, begin at 7 p.m.
