New film club, offers opportunity to share interests
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - A new club kicked off at the Grand Canyon on Jan. 27. The new club offers a chance for people to meet and enjoy a variety of interests.
Random Fandom is more than a film club, they invite anyone interested in anime, film, television series, books, comics and games to join them.
"It's open to everyone, it's free and available bi-monthly on Tuesdays," said club founder Rachel Brenner.
Brenner has worked at the Grand Canyon for two seasons and said that starting a club is a way for her to meet new people who share a common interest.
"This is the first time being a leader, usually I'm the treasurer or historian of the group, but this is a great way to meet friends," she said. "So I decided I'll start a club and meet people. It's a way for people to get out."
For the first few meetings, Brenner will supply a film to watch but in the future she wants to encourage members to bring whatever they are interested in and share it with the group.
"This is not just an anime club, it's for T.V. shows, pop culture and movies," Brenner said. "I'll just gage the mood of the crowd and see, because it's Random Fandom and it's for whatever the member's participate in."
Brenner said she chose the name Random Fandom not only because it rhymed but also as a reflection of what interests club members.
"A fandom is what you're into, your hobby or passion," she said. "It's something fans feel passionately about. Like it was made for them."
Brenner's interests vary but include films and anime with common themes revolving around romantic comedies, comedies and science fiction.
Brenner became a fan of anime after seeing the anime film Sailor Moon. While attending the University of California at Riverside, Brenner majored in theater and joined an anime club. In 1994 she went to the Anime Expo in southern California-the first of many anime conventions she has attended.
In addition to anime Brenner is a cartoonist and enjoys graphic design, illustrating and costume play. She speaks three languages, English, Japanese and French, and is working on learning Spanish.
Brenner said that while interests at the Canyon vary, she hopes to reach out to those who share a love for anime and films.
"I've heard there's a lot of people interested but this is my first time being the leader so it's a big experiment for me," Brenner said.
Random Fandom's next meetings will be Feb. 10 and Feb. 24 at the Grand Canyon Rec. Center's piano room from 1 to 4 p.m.
