Editorial: Not to toot our own horn, but we won some awards
Every year the editorial staff of the Williams-Grand Canyon News and Navajo-Hopi Observer heads down to Prescott Valley for the annual Western News & Info editorial conference.
Our paper is part of a newspaper group that includes the Prescott Daily Courier, Kingman Daily Miner, Verde Independent and Lake Havasu News Herald among many others.
It's good company. Those are quality papers with excellent reporting.
Part of the conference features an award presentation for writing, photography, page design, headlines etc. Pioneer News Group judged the entries. Pioneer owns 23 papers in the Pacific Northwest.
This year the Williams-Grand Canyon News and Navajo-Hopi Observer won a combined 14 awards. Our reporter Katherine Locke took home Excellence in Writing, Enterprise Writing and Sports Writing awards. Our editor Ryan Williams won three photography awards, a headline writing award and a page design award.
Williams reporter Marissa Freireich won six awards including writing and photography awards.
Most notably, Freireich won the coveted Reporter of the Year award in the non-daily category.
She deserves the award and we're proud to have her as a member of our staff.
We're all proud of the work we do in the communities we serve and it's nice to get some industry recognition.
We're not perfect though and welcome your comments on how we can continue to improve. We value our readers and our partners in the community. Have a concern, give us a ring.
And thanks for reading.
