WILLIAMS, Ariz. - Kids in Williams can stay busy this summer while having fun at the Summer Splash Rec Program.

The program starts on June 2 and continues through Aug. 1 at the Williams Youth Recreation Center, 300 W. Railroad Ave. The Summer Splash Rec Program is for kids ages 6-13 and goes from Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Recreation Director Rose Newbold said the program is an important asset to Williams youth and parents.

"It assists our families and our community in having their children in a well-supervised, fun, affordable program for nine weeks out of the summer," she said.

Newbold expects between 60 and 110 kids to attend the program each day this summer.

Kids in the program have two swim days and go one field trip each week. Field trips include going to a bowling alley, a movie theater, the Prescott Zoo, Freedom Station amusement park and a free trip to Bearizona.

When the kids aren't swimming or on a field trip, they can play basketball, tetherball and foursquare and use hula-hoops, jump ropes and the skate park.

"We just try to keep them moving and active as much as possible," Newbold said. "We know that children have a lot of sedentary time at home, so our focus is to try to keep them moving."

In addition, the participants can do crafts and play games like bingo and minute to win it. A talent show, luau, pajama day and pets on parade are also planned.

The Learn to Skate program, which started last year, will continue again this year.

"It creates the next generation of skaters for our skate park," Newbold said. "We're actually teaching them how to get around that park and by the end of last year I believe we had about 10 kids that graduated into regular skating."

The Civitan Foundation will provide free nutritional lunches and an afternoon snack for Summer Rec Program participants. The free lunches are also available to community members who are in need of a meal.

"If there are people that are hungry in town, they can come here between 12 and 1 on Monday through Friday and they...would be given food," Newbold said.

Parents can register their children one time and then bring them to the program as many days as they'd like. The Summer Rec Program will not be offered on two days this summer because of the June 13 Northern Arizona Barbecue Festival and the July 4 holiday.

The cost is $5 per day, plus the price of field trips. The total cost for the entire program plus field trips is $241. Multi-child family discounts are available.

Registration packets are available at the Rec Center. More information is available at (928) 635-1496.
