GCS principal resigns
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Grand Canyon School (GCS) is hunting for a new principal after Toby Melster announced his resignation at the March 11 regular school board meeting. The school hopes to hire a replacement by the end of the school year.
"The entire time Toby has been here, he's personally endeavored to make sure this place is better. It was a very hard decision for him," said Kevin Dickerson, the school's finance director.
At the meeting, board president Kevin Hartigan thanked Melster, who is resigning for personal reasons, for his dedication to the school.
"I appreciate you staying with us, and all the work that you've done," Hartigan said to Melster. "I know it's been difficult and you have to do what's best for your family. I think you have a very high moral character and I stand behind you and thank you for your service."
A Kansas native, Melster graduated from Emporia State University in 1987 and began his teaching career in 1996. One of his last jobs before entering the teaching field was with a mental health agency in child case management.
Before the school hired Melster in 2012, he was a high school assistant principal in Montrose, Colo. Melster left the position to take on principalship in a kindergarten though 12 grade setting at GCS.
