Williams Lady Vikes softball team starts off season strong with big tournament wins

WILLIAMS, Ariz. - The Lady Vikings softball team is on a winning streak at the beginning of the season with three wins at the season opener tournament held Feb. 28 - March 1 in Bagdad.

The Lady Vikings beat Parker, Feb. 28. They moved on and had an exciting game against Bagdad in the tournament Feb. 28.

Head coach Edgar Brown said the Lady Vikes led 5-0 for quite awhile until it started raining and the girls could no longer grip the ball. They made a few mistakes and ended the inning 4-5.

"But when the rain stopped, we went on ahead and beat them 14-4," Brown said.

Next up, the Lady Vikes beat Joe City March 1.

"They were in the game with us for a little while but we beat them 18-8," Brown said.

But the championship game against Chino Valley was rained out. The two coaches decided that when the two teams play against each other in the regular season March 11, the winner of that game will be considered the champion of the tournament.

"I think that's fair," Brown said. "I have high hopes for winning that game."

He added the Chino Valley team and the Lady Vikings get along really well and they have fun playing each other.

"I told the girls, we're friends with them but we go in with authority and let them know who's boss and afterward we hug and kiss and we're on our way," Brown said.

He said that the tournament helped him find areas the girls need to work on throughout the season even though Brown believes he already has a pretty solid team.

"The girls need to work on discipline in ourselves, concentrating on what we have to do, like fielding or batting, and not beating up on ourselves," he said. "When they settle down to do that they are pretty hard to stop."

Brown said the team's pitching is coming together and is improving with each game played and the Lady Vikes' defense is working well but there are some issues to work on offensively.

"From batting to running bases and getting the pitching down to where we're confident in ourselves," he said. "They did a lot of that this weekend."

With a few exceptions, the Lady Vikings are all returning players. Brown said that helps in becoming familiar with what is needed to win ballgames.

"Like I told them, we play them one at a time, win or lose as long as we're improving, that's what counts," he said.
