Grand Canyon community and parents,

Across the state, including the Grand Canyon Unified School District (GCUSP), Arizona's College and Career Ready Standards are being implemented to ensure that all students have the academic knowledge and skills they need to be successful in college, career and life. Arizona joined with 46 other states to create the next generation of K-12 standards in English language arts and literacy in history/social studies, science, technical subjects, and mathematics. These standards provide a consistent framework to prepare students for success in college and/or the 21st century workplace. Arizona's new assessments, Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), beginning 2014-2015 for grades 3 through 11, will build a pathway to college and career readiness and will replace the current Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) test to measure students' progress in the next school year. Our school has been selected to pilot the new PARCC testing system in preparation for statewide implementation. While the students might groan at the extra standardized testing, the opportunities for improvement and test taking skills will be beneficial. GCUSD is currently working with all of our teachers to make sure the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards are taught at all grade levels. Our goal is striving for consistency and effectiveness in the midst of change. Our teachers are commended for their efforts as they implement the new standards and their diligent work during their monthly professional development days ensuring the implementation of these standards. Go Phantoms!

Respectfully,

Kevin Hartigan
