Williams residents can get free health screenings and information at North Country HealthCare Williams' health fair and open house.

The event is Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Williams clinic, 301 S. Seventh St. Clinic Supervisor Mary Case said people can come and go to the event as they please.

"It's just a great time to come when you're feeling good, and not feeling sick, to see what services are available," she said.

This year will be the 22nd annual health fair. Case explained that the event started in the 1990s when the community approved a tax subsidy to help the clinic offer urgent care services after hours.

"The city has been so kind to do that, for people to vote that in, so as a thank you to the community we want to hold a nice health fair and offer information and free screenings," Case said.

The first 125 people at the health fair will receive a free cholesterol screening.

"It is a rather expensive test if someone had to pay for it out of pocket," Case said.

Free blood pressure and glucose checks will also be available.

More than 20 agencies will participate as vendors at this year's fair. Vendors will include the Coconino County Health Department, Life Line Ambulance, the Williams Kiwanis Club, Williams Habitat for Humanity, the Williams Senior Center, Kaibab National Forest and Smokey the Bear, heart, eye and skin specialists, and the North Country Outreach Department, including women's health, HIV and dental representatives.

In addition, representatives will be on hand to provide information about the new Marketplace Health Insurance, which goes into effect Jan. 1 as part of the Affordable Care Act.

A program with speakers, to possibly include North Country administrators and politicians, will start at 10 a.m.

Tours of the upgraded clinic will also be available.

"We've been doing some remodeling in the clinic to make it a nicer experience for people," Case said.

Upgrades include new paint, flooring and furniture.

Health fair attendees can also enter to win raffle prizes that local businesses donated. The Williams Lions Club will provide refreshments for the event.

More information about the health fair is available from the clinic at (928) 635-4441.
