Fall community cleanup day this Saturday

Grab your hats and gloves, because it's time for the Williams Clean and Beautiful Fall Cleanup Day.

Interested volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. on Sept. 21 in the Visitor Center parking lot, 200 Railroad Ave.

Volunteers will spread out to pick up trash all over town, including at the rodeo grounds, transfer station, schools, along Railroad Avenue, near the cemetery and in the Highland Meadows area.

"This is a way for the community to come together and show pride in Williams and that they care," said Clean and Beautiful Chairperson Carol Glassburn.

Arizona Public Service will provide trash bags, soda and water, the Red Garter Bed and Bakery will provide cinnamon rolls, and Holiday Inn will provide coffee for the event.

Along the cleanup route, volunteers should be on the lookout for Easter eggs containing coupons for cash prizes.

At noon, volunteers can enjoy a free barbecue with hamburgers and hot dogs.

The Williams Clean and Beautiful committee has been organizing two cleanup days each year, one in the fall and one in the spring, for about 25 years. About 100 people usually participate in the event.

"It's not just for the tourists coming in, it's for the people that live here, that they don't have to drive up and down the street looking at trash," Glassburn said.

Besides cleaning up trash, residents may dispose of household batteries at the event.

People may also bring old prescription medications so the Williams Police Department can properly dispose of them. The Williams Lions Club is sponsoring this portion of the event.

Another portion of the Cleanup Day events will take place at the transfer station where residents can dispose of tires from 9 a.m. to noon. The transfer station will only accept automobile tires that are off of the rims.

Finally, residents can get rid of large appliances from Sept. 21 to Oct. 5. Those interested may call the city at (928) 635-4451 to schedule a free appliance pick up or take the appliance to the transfer station themselves.

Cleanup Day sponsors include American Legion Cordova Post #13, Arizona Public Service, CamDan Recycling, the city of Williams, the city of Williams Recreation Department, I-40 Fleet Services, Kaibab National Forest Service, Pepsi, Red Garter Bed and Bakery, Williams Lions Club and Williams Police Department.
