Bill Barber seeks donations
Bill Barber is going to Belize from June 28 to July 10 as part of a three-year partnership with Special Olympics in Belize to train their athletes. Barber will be speaking to different groups as a "Global Messenger" and will also be participating in a variety of sports in Camp Shriver's Opening Ceremonies.
To get there, Barber needs to raise $1,500 and is looking for donations. Donations may be made out to Special Olympics Arizona with a notation in the left hand corner, "Bill Barber/Belize." Checks may be mailed to: Bill Barber, P.O. Box 1462, Grand Canyon, AZ, 86023.
Community Garden planting Saturday
The beginning of the season community planting starts Saturday at 9 a.m. Organizers will provide all seeds/plants and tools but ask planters to bring their own water. The planting will take place in the "communal" area of the garden that is used for activities with the school kids. The garden is located next to the soccer field at Grand Canyon School. Grand Canyon softball registration
Grand Canyon Community Softball League registration is now under way. Registration forms are available at the Rec Center. Cost is $200 per team. Games will be Monday and Thursday at 6 p.m. More information is available from Ryan Schaan at (928) 638-3389 or grandcanyonrec@gmail.com.
Flagstaff shopping trip
Shopping destinations may include Wal-Mart, Harkins 11 Theatre Complex, Target, Ross, Family Dollar, Safeway, downtown Flagstaff and Flagstaff Mall. Those interested in the trip should meet in the Rec Center lobby at 7:45 a.m. June 16. The trip fee is $15 and covers transportation only. Participants should bring a watch, ID and spending money.
Table tennis tournament
Residents can test their table tennis abilities and luck against others in the community. The free double-elimination singles tournament starts at 7 p.m. June 17. Sign up starts at 6:45 in the Rec Center lobby. The night's champion will win a prize.
Ice cream soda social
Participants can enjoy an American tradition while meeting and mixing with other community members. Those interested should meet at the ramada at 5 p.m. June 18. Vanilla ice cream, root beer and cola will be available for 50 cents per soda while supplies last.
An evening in Flagstaff
Residents can get away from the Canyon and enjoy a relaxing evening in Flagstaff. Options include eating at a restaurant, seeing a movie, or seeing Nicki Bluhm & the Gramblers at the Orpheum for $15. Those interested in the trip should meet in the Rec Center lobby at 3:45 p.m. The trip fee is $15 per person and covers transportation only. Participants should bring an ID, a watch and spending money.
