Lady Vikes start 2013 with winning record
WILLIAMS, Ariz. - The Williams Lady Vikings started 2013 with three straight victories, and then lost two hard-fought games in a row.
After crushing Mingus Mountain Academy (Prescott Valley) 64-11 at home on Jan. 4, Williams traveled to Ash Fork on Jan. 7 and defeated the Spartans (0-6) 26-19. The Lady Vikes hosted Mingus Mountain Academy again on Jan. 8, this time winning 43-13.
The Lady Vikings suffered a tough home loss to the River Valley Dust Devils 39-29 on Jan. 10. The Williams girls' basketball team traveled to Seligman the next day, where they lost 39-24 to the Antelopes.
"That first game against Mingus was our best offensive game of the year," said Phillip Echeverria, Lady Vikes head basketball coach. "They tried playing us man-to-man and we ran a man offense fairly well, we got a lot of layups."
The Lady Vikes sit at 6-12 overall for the regular season, 3-7 in Arizona power point games.
"Against Ash Fork it was real low scoring, only 11-9 at half," Echeverria said. "We took some good shots, but the shots didn't fall for us. We played well enough to get a victory there, but we really didn't execute very well offensively. We still struggle shooting."
Up next for Williams is a road trip to River Valley High School Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Vikings return home Friday to host the Grand Canyon Lady Phantoms at 5:30 p.m.
"I'm seeing improvement, and that's all we coach for, is to see some type of improvement," Echeverria said. "Jessie Durnez is starting to shoot the ball well, April [Zicopoulos] is looking for her shot down low, things are developing and we are young."
