Park Service to replace underground electric cable at Phantom Ranch
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Grand Canyon National Park will replace and relocate the underground electric cable that services Phantom Ranch early in 2013. Lake Powell Construction will complete the project in coordination with Arizona Public Service and the National Park Service.
Officials expect work on this project to begin Jan. 7., and anticipate the project's completion by March, weather conditions permitting.
Visitors to the Phantom Ranch area should be aware that work might take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on any day of the week. Moderate daytime noise impacts are expected because of construction activities and associated equipment use.
To assure visitor and worker safety, NPS officials are closing portions of the Bright Angel Campground throughout the project and will detour trails in the area around the construction. Hikers are encouraged to watch for and obey signs and be aware that delays are possible.
Up-to-date information on Grand Canyon's backcountry is available by visiting the park's Critical Backcountry Updates web page at www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/trail-closures.htm.
