Grand Canyon Schools budget meeting Feb. 20 at Valle Airport

The Grand Canyon School District is seeking public comment for the 2013-2014 school year's budget. In addition, soon video clips will be available on the district website and the Grand Canyon Schools' YouTube account over the next few months with more budget information.

Additional opportunities to learn about the school budget, state funding, and recommendations to the governing board include:

Public presentations on the school budget and state funding will be at Valle Airport Feb. 20 and April 2 at 5 p.m.; RP's Stage Stop in Tusayan Feb. 21 and April 3 at 5:30 p.m. and Grand Canyon School's Multipurpose room April 4 at 6:30 p.m.

GC Community Library Storytime Wednesdays

Grand Canyon Community Library offers storytime for young reading enthusiasts on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Former elementary school music teacher Paul Karlsberger will be playing music and reading. Currently, Karlsberger is an entertainer at The Grand Hotel in Tusayan.

Librarian Mindy Karlsberger is looking for a volunteer to coordinate the Summer Reading Program. More information is available by contacting the library at (928) 638-2718.

Friday school at GCS

Grand Canyon School (GCS) offers Friday school for any sixth to 12th grade students needing additional help. Students can come by on their own if they feel the need for extra help or teachers can refer them. Friday school is in the 410 lab at the high school building from 9 a.m. to noon. No transportation or meals are provided. Staff reserves the right to dismiss any student disruptive to the learning environment.

Adult open gym basketball

Adults in the Grand Canyon/Tusayan community can play full-court basketball games every Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. The free activity takes place at the Grand Canyon School Gym.

Win a trip for two to Las Vegas

The Rec Center will randomly choose one person from selected sponsored activities to enter into a drawing. The drawing will be April 1 and the winner will receive a free trip for two to Las Vegas. The trip will take place in May in conjunction with the Rec Center program.

The free trip includes motor-coach transportation to and from Las Vegas and two nights of lodging (double occupancy). Those who enter the drawing must be 18 years or older.

Personal trainer available

Personal trainer Terri Attridge is providing personal training at the Grand Canyon Rec Center once a week. Interested parties may email tattridge@gmail.com for further details.

Coed volleyball and open gym basketball

Every Sunday, participants can play coed volleyball from 5 to 7 p.m. and open gym basketball from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Grand Canyon School gym. Participants must wear clean shoes for the free event.

Archaeology comes alive on the Kaibab every Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon in March

Free Archaeology Month Thursday Evening Lecture Series starts at 6:30 p.m at Café 326 on Route 66, 326 West Route 66, Williams.

Because of limited seating, rangers encourage participants to call (928) 635-5600 for reservations. Food is available by calling (928) 635-0777 to pre-order.

• March 7 - Williams and Tusayan Ranger District Heritage Accomplishment Report. Williams and Tusayan Ranger District Archaeologist Neil Weintraub will discuss the efforts that Kaibab archaeologists and partners took to protect, interpret and enhance prehistoric and historic archaeological sites on the Williams and Tusayan Ranger District during fiscal year 2012.

• March 14 - Williams History Photo Project. Kaibab National Forest Heritage and Tribal Program Manager Margaret Hangan will discuss the joint project between the Williams Public Library and the Kaibab National Forest to collect and scan historic photos of Williams and the surrounding area.

• March 21 - Williams Area Historic Photo Re-Shoot Project. For the past decade, Williams Ranger District staff has re-shot historic photographs of the Williams area to document how the forest has changed. The presentation will compare and contrast these dramatic differences. It will also discuss the local history that helped shape the current condition of the forest surrounding Williams.

• March 28 - We Still Walk in Their Footprint: The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Northern Arizona, 1933-1942. Historian Robert Audretsch will discuss how the Civilian Conservation Corps, along with other New Deal agencies, was responsible for unprecedented federal land agency infrastructure growth in northern Arizona during the Great Depression.These 44 CCC companies completed an astounding number of projects accomplishing as much as 50 years of work in less than 10 years. From the first reliable road from St. George, Utah to Wolf Hole, Ariz. to the rustic cabins of Hualapai Mountain Park at Kingman, to the Crown King Ranger Station, to the Painted Desert Inn at Petrified Forest National Park we still walk in that CCC footprint.

Three-day Las Vegas trip

Participants will stay at the Flamingo Casino and Hotel for two nights while exploring the gaming and entertainment opportunities in Las Vegas. Those interested in the trip should meet in the Recreation Center lobby at 9:45 a.m. Feb. 26. The trip fee is $140 per person and includes transportation to and from Las Vegas and a double occupancy room for two nights. Participants should bring ID, walking shoes, a watch and spending money. Van space is limited and participants should pay in advance to reserve a seat.

Poker night

Participants can test their poker skill and luck against others in the Grand Canyon/Tusayan community. The free activity begins at 7 p.m. in the Rec Center's piano room Feb. 26.

Friday night flix

Next week's featured movie is "Argo," which is rated R and stars Ben Affleck, Taylor Schilling, Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston and John Goodman.

The free movie starts at 7 p.m. on March 1 in the Rec Center's multipurpose room. Rec Center staff will provide free lemonade and popcorn while supplies last.

Sedona Film Festival trip

Participants can enjoy the ambiance of downtown Sedona and view one or two films in the 19th annual Sedona Film Festival. Those interested in the trip should meet in the Rec Center lobby at 7:45 a.m. March 2.

The trip fee is $20 and includes transportation only. Movie tickets may be purchased in advance or at the box office. Participants should bring an ID, spending money and a watch. Van space is limited and participants should pay in advance to reserve a seat.
