Grand Canyon North Rim opens May 15
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will open Highway 67 to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park on May 15 by 8 a.m. Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim, a Forever Resorts property and Grand Canyon Trail Rides will start their 2013 seasonal operations on that day.
Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim operations include lodging, groceries, camper services, food services and a service station. All concessioners will open at 10 a.m., with the exception of the dining room that will open at 11:30 a.m for lunch. Lodge check-in will begin at 4 p.m.
All National Park Service (NPS) services, including the Visitor Center, backcountry permitting office, and campground, as well as the Grand Canyon Association bookstore will be available on May 15 at 8 a.m.
The first scheduled ranger program, Grand Canyon Geology, will be on the back porch of the Grand Canyon Lodge at 3 p.m. May 15 marks the first evening program of the season at 8 p.m. in the Lodge auditorium.
"The Guide," a free publication distributed at the North Entrance Station, the North Rim Visitor Center, and other contact stations in the park all ranger programs will be listed online at www.nps.gov/grca
October 15 is the last day for most concessioner services and regularly scheduled ranger-led programs. NPS will continue its operations including the North Rim Visitor Center and Bookstore, as well as the Backcountry Permits Office through Oct. 31.
November 1 through December 1 the North Rim will be open in the day only, unless snow closes Highway 67 prior to that date.
From November 1 through December 1 pay-at-the-pump gas and diesel will still be available and visitors will continue to have access to Point Imperial and Bright Angel viewpoints, as well as the North Kaibab Trailhead.
For walkers or hikers, camping is available at the North Rim Campground and Yurt, provided they have a backcountry use permit.
South Rim Backcountry Information Center, and Pipe Spring National Monument Visitor Center located in Fredonia offer backcountry permits.
The North Rim lies at the southern end of the Kaibab Plateau, approximately 8,500 feet in elevation. It is approximately a 215-mile drive from the South Rim. Points of interest include Point Imperial, Cape Royal, Point Sublime, North Kaibab Trail and Bright Angel Point.
