Special Olympics Car Wash

Xanterra Fire & Security is sponsoring an annual car wash benefiting the Special Olympics on Saturday at the Rec Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

GC Community Library seeks volunteer

Librarian Mindy Karlsberger is looking for a volunteer to coordinate the Summer Reading Program. More information is available by contacting the library at (928) 638-2718.

Personal trainer available

Personal trainer Terri Attridge is providing personal training at the Grand Canyon Rec Center once a week. Interested parties may email tattridge@gmail.com for further details.

Coed volleyball and open gym basketball

Every Sunday, participants can play coed volleyball from 5 to 7 p.m. and open gym basketball from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Grand Canyon School gym. Participants must wear clean shoes for the free event.

Grand Canyon hiking club

Residents can get active and along the way earn a 100 mile commemorative T-shirt. The first 20 members will also receive an additional T-shirt at sign up. Registration is available at the Rec Center. Annual membership is $10. Membership guidelines are available at www.GrandCanyonRec.org. Membership at the Rec Center is not required to enter.

Grand Canyon employee T-shirt contest

Residents can show their creativity in this contest. The first 10 entries will receive a free one-month membership at the Rec Center. The top prize is a one-year membership at the Rec Center. Rec Center photography contest

Residents are encouraged to share their pictures of Rec Center events and activities in this contest. The deadline is midnight on May 31. The top prize is a free trip for two to Las Vegas. The contest rules are available at www.GrandCanyonRec.org. Membership at the Rec Center is not required to enter.

Bearizona and Red Butte day hike

The group will start off hiking Red Butte Trail just outside of Tusayan. The trail is three miles round trip with a 900 foot elevation gain. Then the group will visit Bearizona to see animal wildlife in its natural environment from the safety of the van. A brief trip to Safeway is included in the itinerary. Those interested in the trip should meet in the Rec Center lobby at 8:45 a.m. May 4. The trip fee is $10 per person and includes all transportation expenses and entry into Bearizona. Participants should bring an ID, good walking shoes, water, sunscreen, a watch and spending money. Van space is limited and participants should pay in advance to reserve a seat.

Karaoke planet

Community members can display their singing talents at this free event. Music starts at 6 p.m. May 4 in the Rec Center's multipurpose room. Participants can bring their own music or choose from the songs available in the Rec Center's karaoke library. Those submitting an Internet song (from YouTube for example) should bring a specific Internet address.

Sedona day hike

The group will choose from a number of trails to explore the spectacular red rock scenery. Those interested in the trip should meet in the Rec Center lobby at 7:45 a.m. on May 6. The trip fee is $20 per person and covers transportation costs and entrance into the park(s). Participants should bring an ID, drinking water, good hiking shoes, lunch and/or spending money. Van space is limited and participants should pay in advance to reserve a seat.

Flagstaff shopping trip

Destinations may include Wal-Mart, Harkins 11 Theatre Complex, Target, Safeway and the Flagstaff Mall. Those interested in the trip should meet in the Rec Center lobby at 12:45 p.m. May 7. The trip fee is $15 per person and covers transportation only. Participants should bring a watch, ID and spending money. Van space is limited and participants should pay in advance to reserve a seat.

Dodgeball

Community members can get some friends together and play, burn off excess energy and have fun. The free event will take place rain or shine. Play begins at 6 p.m. at the all-sports court on May 8.

Poker night

Residents can test their poker skill and luck against others in the Grand Canyon and Tusayan community. The free event starts at 7 p.m. on May 9 in the piano room.

Friday night flix

This week's featured movie is "Promised Land," which is rated R and stars Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Dave Eggers and Frances McDormand. The movie starts at 7 p.m. May 10 in the Rec Center's multipurpose room. Free lemonade and popcorn will be available.

Table tennis tournament

Residents can test their ping pong skills and luck against others in the Grand Canyon and Tusayan community. Sign up starts at 6:45 p.m. May 11 in the Rec Center lobby. The free double elimination singles tournament will start at 7 p.m. The night's champion will win a prize.
