Flagstaff's Ballet Folklorico de Colores dance on Hopi Stage Sept. 29
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Ballet Folklorico de Colores hit the Hopi Stage at Grand Canyon National Park Sept. 29, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The Grand Canyon National Park Diversity Council sponsored the event.
The Diversity Council's mission is to promote an increased awareness of and a shared commitment to inclusiveness and diversity to all park staff and visitors. Part of the mission is to recognize and celebrate cultures of the local communities and beyond.
Ballet Folklorico de Colores is a non-profit organization based in Flagstaff dedicated to teaching traditional Mexican Folk dance to youth of all cultural backgrounds.
"Many of the families and dancers had never been to Grand Canyon National Park, so this was an excellent opportunity for them to experience the Grand Canyon, and for them to share their culture with visitors and staff," said Jessica Kitterman, the group's director.
Established in 2005, Ballet Folklorico de Colores is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching traditional Mexican Folk dance to Flagstaff youth of all cultural backgrounds. The group averages 50-60 dancers ranging in ages from five to eighteen. They offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced level classes.
