Editorial: School district budget override

Last week, voters in Williams passed the Williams Unified School District's (WUSD) budget override. Thank goodness. With money allocation from the state for schools at an all time low, it is encouraging to see residents of Williams stand up for quality education in the community.

The 10 percent Maintenance and Operations (M&O) budget override has been in effect for the past 10 years. Voting to extend the override does not increase taxes.

WUSD officials said if taxpayers did not approve the override renewal, the district would have lost about $372,000, potentially eliminating educational programs, physical education classes, junior varsity athletics and staff positions.

Teachers and administrators need the support of the community. Teaching is a tough job. Passage of the override will help the district attract and retain quality teachers.

They're dedicated to teaching future generations despite a lower pay scale. It's a sacrifice.

As community members, we need to step up to the plate and find ways to support our educators. Volunteer to help coach a sports team. Help out with a club. Show up to student events.

Williams Unified School District administrators are working hard to improve education in Williams. Let's do everything we can to support their goals. It's in our best interest as a community.
