A new kind of honor roll
WHS Principal Tristan Heisley implements new program to reward good grades
WILLIAMS, Ariz. - Beginning this school year, Williams High School (WHS) students that maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher will be rewarded with pizza, cake and soda, as well as Harkins Theater gift cards and coupons for a free pizza from Pizza Factory.
At the end of every grading quarter, each student with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher will be rewarded with a pizza party and additional treats from McDonald's, Pizza Hut, or Taco Bell.
The specific rewards will be different each quarter. For the first quarter this school year, students needed to have a 3.3 GPA to receive the pizza party, a Harkins gift card, and a free Pizza Factory pizza. However going forward, Principal Tristan Heisley said the minimum requirement is a 3.5 GPA.
Heisley said he initiated the program not only to reward good students, but to encourage all students to raise their grades and achieve more for themselves. And, if students keep their grades high all year, they will receive another bonus.
"I talked to Young Life yesterday, we are sending each and every one of you guys out to Lost Canyon at the end of the school year if you stay on this list all four times," said Heisley, addressing the students. "We're going to send you out there for a day to go play."
This quarter 53 out of 215 WHS students made the cut. Heisley said he hopes all those students stay on the list and that even more make the list next quarter, especially more freshmen.
Pizza Factory, McDonald's, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and Harkins help sponsor the program. They provide food, coupons, gift cards, or other incentives each quarter.
