FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - On July 25 at approximately 8:50 a.m. Northern Arizona 911 dispatchers received a call of a suspicious person in the area of the Bellemont Truck Stop located off Interstate 40 approximately 10 miles west of Flagstaff.

Upon their arrival, deputies made contact with a man they identified as 46-year-old Dennis Wayne Floyd of Kingman, Ariz. During the investigation, deputies were able to link Floyd to a vehicle that was parked in the west lot of the Bellemont Motel 6. The vehicle had been entered as stolen into the National Crime Information Center database by representatives of the Prescott Valley Police Department.

Upon closer inspection of the vehicle, deputies identified what appeared to be a hand grenade of military origin attached to and dangling from the interior of the roof of the vehicle. A length of wire was attached to what appeared to be the firing pin of the hand grenade, and the other end of the wire was attached to the steering wheel of the vehicle.

Deputies established a safe perimeter around the vehicle and evacuated the commercial vehicle parking lot of the Bellemont Truck Stop and the west wing of the Bellemont Motel 6. Flagstaff Police Department Bomb Squad technicians responded and used a mechanical robot and other remote control tools to enter the vehicle and make contact with the device. The technicians were able to determine that the item was not explosive but was manufactured to look like a military hand grenade.

Detectives questioned Floyd at the sheriff's office located in Flagstaff. During the interview, he made statements connecting him to the stolen vehicle. Floyd was transported to the Coconino County Detention Facility in Flagstaff where he was incarcerated for one count of theft of means of transportation and one count of felony misconduct involving a simulated explosive device.
