Obituary: Ruth I. Erdmann
Born in Jackson, Mich. on Feb. 19, 1921 to Maudie and A. Ivan Gorton, Ruth grew up living in Missouri and Iowa. She graduated from Davenport High School in Davenport, Iowa, married, had two daughters and lived there until 1950.
She and her family then moved to Southern California where she was a homemaker and taught herself to crochet. She spent many hours making crocheted gifts for family and friends. She loved to cook and experiment with new recipes. She began a long career with the Bank of America in Burbank, Calif., which she enjoyed until her retirement.
After retiring from the bank, she and her husband moved to Williams, Ariz. where they both worked for the Grand Canyon Railway. Ruth worked in the gift shop, and her husband was an entertainer. Evenings would find her at Miss Kitty's Steakhouse where she loved portraying "Miss Kitty," proudly making her own costumes and entertaining the guests in attendance. Subsequently, she was known as "Miss Kitty" throughout the community, which really tickled her.
A few years later, to escape the winter weather, they moved to Grass Valley, Calif. where they became active members of Moose Lodge 2217 and spent numerous happy hours with friends doing charitable work.
Ruth died peacefully in Grass Valley, Calif. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012 just two-and-a-half weeks short of her 91st birthday.
Survivors include her husband of over 48 years, Robert Glen Erdmann; two daughters, Carol DeLander (Bob) of Williams, Arizona and Donna Recker (Jerry) of Grass Valley, California; five grandchildren Kurt, Stacy, Nicky, Crystal and Jennifer and nine great-grandchildren as well as a multitude of friends and extended family. She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Sierra Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Grass Valley, and a Celebration of Life will take place at the Grass Valley Moose Lodge on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012.
