Community holiday dinner set for Dec. 16 at Doc Holliday's
WILLIAMS, Ariz. - The Thanksgiving leftovers may be gone, but Williams residents don't have to wait a whole year until the next holiday feast.
Kiwanis is cooking up its 10th annual Community Holiday Dinner from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 16 at Doc Holliday's Steakhouse, 950 N. Grand Canyon Blvd.
What started as an event to provide holiday meals for the less fortunate is now open to the entire community.
"It's our way of being thankful for the community we live in and taking care of everybody in our community during the holidays," said Carol Glassburn, a Kiwanis member and organizer.
Local service clubs, organizations and about 45 individual volunteers collaborate to put on the event.
"Kiwanis is the one that started it, it just got too big for us. And we asked for help and where'd it come from? Everywhere," said Kiwanis member Bud Parenteau.
Volunteers help with bussing tables, cooking and serving food, washing dishes, serving drinks and running raffle tables.
This year, Kiwanis hopes to serve between 550 and 600 people. Volunteers will dish out all of the trimmings, including 25 turkeys, 15 hams and 400 potato's worth of mashed potatoes.
Organizers also hope to serve 100 dozen cookies, but Kiwanis needs volunteers to help bake them. Those interested may call Glassburn at (928) 635-4503.
As in past years, Kiwanis has organized a raffle to give away bicycles to ten children.
"It makes us all feel good," said Kiwanis member Teresa Rodriguez of giving back to the community.
Santa will arrive at the event in a fire truck bearing gifts for all children in attendance. Parents who want pictures of their child with Santa should bring their own camera.
The Kiwanis club is seeking donations for Curly the Bear stuffed animals, which Santa will give out to the kids. The bears are a fundraiser through Avon. The club hopes to give out 200 bears.
"He's just a cuddly bear," said Virginia Quinn, who is handling the donations. "I think it really puts a big smile on the children's faces to receive such a cute bear."
If Quinn receives additional money beyond what she needs to purchase the bears, she will donate it to next year's community holiday dinner.
Those interested in helping may send donations to Quinn at 106 S. Ninth St. or call her at (928) 635-0677.
