Guest column: Seeking applicants for open council seat

Greetings fellow Tusayan residents.

It has been a very active few weeks for your Town Council and staff. Not only are we looking for some resident's to offer their name for the council vacancy, but we have also been busy working on a number of town projects and planning for things to come.

We would again urge residents that have an interest in serving their community to speak with one of the current council members about what is involved in serving on the town council. While it can be time consuming at times, it can also be very rewarding in being part of shaping our town for years to come. We welcome a diversity of opinions and experience on the council. All we ask is a willingness to see a bigger picture than just your personal needs or interest. The position is one that needs to think first of the town and its future and how each decision we make can impact that big picture. In the coming months and years, we have a review of the town's area plan, the zoning ordinances, the design review overlay, creation of town codes and policies, working with the school on the Tusayan park project, and of course the development plans and zoning applications that are in front of the council at this time. So there is a lot to do and being a part of doing it right for the town's benefit.

Yes, you will be challenged by those who may not agree with your view and they may not always be nice about it. What change and growth in our history as a country, state or community has ever come easily? I remember my father telling me, when I told him something was hard to do, "that if it was easy, it would have already been done." What I have found is that you can learn from those who disagree with you and maybe modify your point of view, if you are open to it and don't take it personal. We are a small town and it is easy to take many things personal when we are challenged. Being a small town is also what makes us special, unique and the opportunity to be a part of the process for change and building our town. It is just that opportunity that is rewarding and builds the leadership of our town. We need to have more voices, not fewer, that are speaking from differing points of view, not the same, and willing to listen as well.

I would encourage anyone who has even a slight interest to come and talk with one of us, so we can give you the right information to make a sound and well thought out decision. It may not be right for you, but until you take a good look you won't know that it could be the best experience of your life. Step up and be part of making the process and decisions the best they can be. Please send us a letter of interest, reasons why you want to serve and any relevant experiences that would make you a good choice, by Oct. 5.

Thanks for being part of our great town and giving us the opportunity to serve you as your town council.

Respectfully,

Greg Bryan
