Native plant restoration underway at Paiute Apartments
Plants and soil salvaged from construction site, replanting to occur during Sunday volunteer
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Grand Canyon National Park's Vegetation Program is currently restoring native vegetation around the new Paiute Apartments, which provide 64 additional units for National Park Service employees. As part of the native plant restoration effort, a volunteer opportunity for Grand Canyon and Paiute Apartments residents will be held on Sunday.
The Vegetation Program will offer two volunteer sessions, one between 9 a.m. and noon, and between 1-4 p.m. The sessions will begin with a planting demonstration and tool training.
The volunteer planting opportunities are one facet of a comprehensive restoration of native vegetation in the former construction zones around the Paiute Apartments, which opened in early July. Prior to construction, plants and soils were salvaged from the site. The site has been seeded and mulched, and a total of 12,000 plants including small trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers will be planted by December. A Student Conservation Association Native Plants Conservation Corps Team is leading the vegetation restoration project, under the direction of park staff.
Vegetation Program Manager Lori Makarick said the project will significantly increase the aesthetic characteristics of the area in addition to providing better habitat for native wildlife and birds.
"Today, there is nearly bare soil surrounding the apartments," she said. "The upcoming volunteer opportunity will give an opportunity for park residents to help beautify their home, in addition to learning about the plants found living in and around the Village."
The Sept. 25 volunteer sessions will meet in front of the 100 series apartments. The park will provide gloves, eye protection, safety vests, snacks and water. Volunteers should bring a water bottle, and sunscreen, and wear close-toed shoes, long pants and a sun hat.
