GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - Due to the resignation of Erin Noojibail, one seat on the Grand Canyon Unified District Governing Board is vacant.

Coconino County Superintendent of Schools Robert Kelty notified the public April 18 about the opportunity to serve as a governing board member. According to information provided by the county, Kelty determined that an appointment to fill the vacant seat will best meet the needs of the community and the Grand Canyon Unified School District. The term of this appointment will be from the date of appointment in May and will continue through December 31, 2012, the end of Noojibail's term on the board.

All letters of interest and application need to be received no later than 5 p.m. June 3. An advisory committee, consisting of district residents as well as a current board member, will be assembled to conduct interviews and advise Superintendent Kelty on the appointment.

Grand Canyon School District Superintendent Sharyl Allen said Noojibail, a National Park Service employee, has been transferred out of the Grand Canyon.

"The park service is going through the process of moving positions into Flagstaff, so we have a board member who is not going to be local anymore," she said.

To be eligible to serve on a school district governing board:

• A candidate must be a registered voter of the State of Arizona;

• A candidate must be a resident of the school district for at least one year prior to the appointment;

• A candidate or their spouse may not be an employee of the district.
