Rangers recover body from below rim at Grand Canyon
Unidentified woman falls 600 feet
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. - On Feb. 9 at approximately 4 p.m., the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a separated party in the vicinity of the Yavapai Geology Museum. The reporting party stated that upon his return from the men's room, he could not locate his wife.
Almost an hour later, park rangers spotted a body, currently believed to be that of the missing woman, approximately 600 feet below the rim just east of the Geology Museum.
Due to waning light and quickly dropping temperatures, a decision was made to wait until Thursday to send rangers in to recover the body.
Rangers hiked into the Canyon in order to document the scene and prepare the body for transport.
The body was transported to the rim via helicopter where it was met by the Coconino County Medical Examiner Feb. 11.
The National Park Service and law enforcement officials are conducting an investigation into the incident. The identity of the woman has not yet been determined and no further information is available at this time.
