Firefighters prep Maine School grounds for prescribed burn
PARKS - Firefighters from the Ponderosa Fire Department (PFD) worked two days to prepare the Maine School property for prescribed burning. Ponderosa partnered with the Bear Jaw Fire and Fuels Crew to cut small diameter trees and to dig fire control lines that will be used to manage the prescribed fire.
Depending on weather conditions, burning will take place on school and forest property in the next few weeks. The use of prescribed fire will improve forest health and reduce the heavy accumulation of needles and small branches that contribute to the spread of catastrophic wildfires. Fire officials remind all residents to be safe when burning leaves or pine needles by burning in an area cleared to dirt, keeping water, hose and shovel near-by and not burning on windy days. Please notify the PFD before burning at 773-8933 from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
