Red Ribbon Campaign begins tomorrow

WILLIAMS - The fight against drug abuse continues tomorrow when the annual Red Ribbon Campaign begins with an assembly at the Williams Elementary-Middle School. The event is sponsored by the Williams Police Department, Williams Unified School District and the Williams Alliance.

Red Ribbon Week is held every year across America the last week of October. Red Ribbon Week is a time to remind all to become involved in the community in the fight against drug abuse.

The Red Ribbon Campaign began in 1985 as a united effort after Federal Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena was murdered by drug traffickers. The Red Ribbon became the universal symbol to reduce the demand for drugs.

This year's local Red Ribbon celebration includes a poster contest for all students kindergarten through 12 (public, private and home-schooled), free drug prevention handouts for students and parents, Red Ribbons and Red Ribbon awareness bracelets. A cookie social and awards presentation begins at 5 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Williams Senior Center, 850 W. Grant Ave.

Organizers are asking adults that see students wearing ribbons or bracelets, to please tell the children you are recognizing them as someone willing to make a positive choice and abstain from using drugs.
