WEMS recognizes Constitution Day
WILLIAMS - Every school in the U.S.A. is required by federal law to hold an educational program pertaining to the United States Constitution. The day that Congress designated as Constitution Day is Sept. 17 of each year. This day recognizes the day that the Constitution was signed by the Founding Fathers on Sept. 17, 1787, in Philadelphia, Penn.
In Williams Elementary-Middle School (WEMS), the program included only the eighth grade students who are enrolled in the civics classes.
Judge William Sutton, retiring Justice of the Peace in Williams, was the guest speaker in the morning session. The judge spoke to the young people about the Constitution and how this document has relevancy in their lives as well as in the lives of all Americans. Since school in Williams is not in session on Sept. 17, this program was held on Sept. 16.
In the afternoon program, the students viewed the film, A More Perfect Union, a dramatic reenactment of the four months of the Constitutional Convention in the summer of 1787 in Independence Hall.
The complete program stimulated interest in and answered questions about the Founding Fathers and the Constitution.
