Editorial: Community support for newspapers is essential

There are a number of species when it comes to newspapers. Dailies and business journals, entertainment guides, and more are only a sampling of the variety of newspapers available to readers the world over. Daily newspapers are the most common, featuring news from around the globe, local stories, and pertinent information such as weather forecasts, obituaries, movie listings and more.

A community newspaper, like the Williams-Grand Canyon News, is similar to a daily in a number of respects, particularly when it comes to notifications of interest to the public. The biggest difference, however, is the reliance a community newspaper has with its readers. Much of what can be found in a community newspaper is facilitated by those who read the stories. Local information, including news submitted by members of area groups, teachers, family members, and others can be found within the pages of a community newspaper each week.

It's the local support that makes a community newspaper what it is. Without continued contributions from those who live in the area, community newspapers would not retain their unique form of news. And as many newspapers across the nation continue to close their doors, shift exclusively to online content, or cut back on their number of employees, that help from the community is needed now more than ever. Reporters cover multiple stories at the same time and cannot be everywhere at once. Often, events need to be publicized well enough in advance, particularly those events that are open to the public. Getting the word out can often lead to a larger turnout for special functions in the area.

The Grand Canyon News welcomes submitted material. Whether that be guest columns, such as that penned by Tusayan Mayor Pete Shearer on Page 4B, or any other form of information that is of interest to community members around the Grand Canyon and Williams area. The News can be reached at (928) 635-4426 or by mail at 118 S. Third St., Williams, AZ 86046.
