A number of events were held at Grand Canyon School May 20 to mark the end of another succesful school year for the district. Seniors cooked-up lunch, awards were given out, Earth Day activities, a senior send off, middle school students participated in a poetry slam held in the auditorium, a three-point basketball contest, a middle school dance and more. Grand Canyon School seniors will graduate Friday at the El Tovar, beginning at 6 p.m. Students in the senior class talked about their plans following graduation.

Miriam Jenelle Bankston

Canyon resident: I've been here eight long years. Activities: volleyball, basketball, track, student council, sophomore class president, Hands Across the Border, National Art Honor Society, recreation center board of directors, yearbook. Future plans: I plan on going to Eastern Arizona College where I'll major in administration of justice and minor in Spanish. After the first two years I'll transfer to a university to get my bachelor's. Who, what I will miss the most: I'm going to miss sports, especially basketball, and some of my teachers. That's pretty much it. I'm going to miss my friends. Bomb Squad! ChelC, I'm going to miss you so much dude, remember all of our promises. I'm definitely going to miss my family. Joey, dude, now I'm not going to have anyone to make me laugh. Paul, you're crazy. Mother, AKA my bestie; I'll miss you. You can expect me home twice a month. Thank you to: my friends who were there when everything went wrong, my teachers for realizing my potential and never giving up on me, even when I did, my family and all my second families (Wahlers, Timeches), most importantly the most amazing woman in the world, my mommy. Thank you for everything. I love you so much, mama. Stephanie Begay

Canyon resident: all my life. Future plans: I'm going to work for two years and go to community college at College America online. Favorite memory: spending time with my sisters.

Alexis Daniel Celis Rivera

Canyon Resident: 10 years. Activities: student council, soccer, basketball, yearbook. Future plans: attend community college in New Mexico and major in business management. Who, what I will miss the most: I will miss my Aunt Alma, Uncle Juan, cousin Cyssero, cousin Jose, Shelay, Maya, Arwen, Christy, Keslee, Monique, Miriam, Brandie, Kelsey, Chelsea, Crystal, Little Deer, brother Larrin and Andrew. Thank you to: my mother Pilar and my little brother. Awards: recognition for demonstrating proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics as measured by the AIMS, culinary arts completers, outstanding civic participation, high school student council senior representative, outstanding commitment to peer council, male athlete of the year, You're My Hero award, offensive player of the year, dreamer award. Keslee Morgan Foster

Canyon Resident: 18 years.Activities: Band, basketball, class government, National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, softball, student body government, volleyball, yearbook. Future plans: I will be attending the Walter Kronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University in the fall. I will major in journalism with a minor in public relations. Who, what I will miss the most? I will miss my family immensely. They have shaped me into the person I am today. I will also miss being in a community where everyone knows each other and is so willing to help and support. I will also miss my friends who have been there for me when I needed it the most. Thank you to: I would like to thank my mom and brother. It's been a rough couple of years, but with the support and love we gave each other everything turned out okay. I thank my dad who is watching me from above. He always believed in me even when I didn't. Thanks to all my aunts and uncles (Chrystal, too) for being there when we needed it most. You all mean everything to me. Veronica Garcia

Canyon resident: all of my life. Future plans: I am going to get two jobs hopefully, work. Who, what I will miss the most: Ms. McBroom and Ms. Weber. Favorite memory: sixth grade, because it was a disaster. It was fun.

Tiffany Ann Kerr

Canyon resident: 18 years. Activities: volleyball, basketball, track and field, band. Future plans: I'll be attending Northern Arizona University and I'll be majoring in nursing. Who, what I will miss the most: I will miss sports the most, especially basketball and volleyball. I will also miss my closest friends (Marissa, Chelsea, Miriam, Cuco, Daniel, Keslee and Monique. I'll also miss my family, even though they will be 45 minutes away. And the class of 2010! Thank you to: My parents and family! They've supported me throughout my high school career and they've always been there to push me to achieve my goals. Also to my friends for always being there for me when times got tough. I'd also like to thank Coach Lopez and Ms. Halverson for making high school enjoyable and unforgettable. And lastly to the class of 2010 for being with me each step of the way. Awards: female athlete of the year, offensive player of the year, high honor roll, making a dream come true award, outstanding civic participation award, excellence in trigonometry award, recognition for demonstrating proficiency in reading, writing and mathemmatics as measured by the AIMS, culinary arts completers, Making Dreams Reality. Tasha Lynn Ray

Canyon resident: since I was little; went to school at Grand Canyon since kindergarten. Activities: I have participated in Kolb Studio; I would submit an art piece in Kolb Studio since my freshman year. Future plans: go to Northern Arizona University and find something that I want to study. Soon I will find the right thing I want to do. Who, what I will miss the most: I will miss everyone in my senior class; I've been with a lot of them since elementary. I will also miss my friends here at GC and the great teachers that I had. Thank you to: I would like to thank all of my teachers that have taught me all that I know now. I want to thank my parents, brothers and sister. They were the ones that told me that I can do anything if I put my mind to it and they kept telling me to expand my education. Awards: recognition for demonstrating proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics as measured by the AIMS, completer of hospitality program, outstanding senior show presentation for Kolb Studio, yearbook (Small, but Mighty), outstanding peer counselor, Walking in Beauty award.

Refugio Antonio Jaime

Canyon resident: seven years. Activities: soccer, basketball, track. Future plans: to attend Yavapai Community College, then transfer to a university. Who, what will you miss the most: family and friends. Thank you to: family and friends for supporting me during the good times and the bad times. Awards: recognition for demonstrating proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics as measured by the AIMS, CTE completers of hospitality, outstanding civic participation, peer counseling award, oh my god miss I swear it want me award, most improved student. Scholarship: Paco Hunter scholarship.

Monique Terese Streit

Canyon resident: 13 years. Activities: volleyball, basketball, track and field, high school dance team, student government, National Honor Society, Recreation Center Board of Directors, yearbook, band. Future plans: I will be attending Northern Arizona University in the fall of 2010 and will be majoring in secondary education - mathematics. Who, what I will miss the most: I will miss my family and friends so much. I will miss playing volleyball and basketball and running track. Thank you to: my parents Jon and Suzette Streit for supporting me and believing in me. I love you guys so much! Thank you to my brother Chris and Luke for being there for me. Thank you to all my friends for supporting me and making me laugh when I was stressed out or down. You guys mean the world to me. Erik Vessey

Canyon resident: 11 years. Activities: School of Rock. Future plans: going to college at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, and getting my bachelor's in film, and becoming a film director in the next few years. Who, what I will miss the most: I'm mostly going to miss my family. Who wouldn't, right? They have been there for me every single second of the day. My friends Tiffany Wilson, Josey Ariaza, Jaymie Petzoldt, Chris Vessey, Mr. Haughton, Luke Streit, basically everyone here. I got along pretty well with everyone and developed some really great friendships. Awards: director's award, completion of culinary arts and world's best scam artist, Pell grant.

Marissa Grace Timeche

Canyon resident: 11 years. Activities: high school band, volleyball, basketball, track and field. Future plans: to attend Yavapai Community College, transfer to Northern Arizona University for a degree in nursing. Who, what I will miss the most: I will most definitely miss my Daddy-o, sisters, lil bro, and baby Trevor. I will miss Chelsea Curtis and the Akan/Bankston family. Thank you to: my dad for the constant push, Ms. Davis for helping me get all college stuff into gear and for opening my eyes of what the future and world holds in store for me, and Kathleen Akan for all the love and support. Awards: recognition for demonstrating proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics as measured by the AIMS, excellence in human anatomy and physiology, culinary arts completers, outstanding civic participation, If You Really Knew Me award.
