Celebrate National Trails Day Saturday
WILLIAMS - The public is invited to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the American Hiking Society's National Trails Day at an event on the Kaibab National Forest at Dogtown Lake. The Kaibab National Forest is sponsoring the event, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, in cooperation with the city of Williams, the Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce and Williams Clean and Beautiful.
Participants of all ages are invited to join in the festivities and participate in improving the Davenport Hill Trailhead area at Dogtown Lake. Participants are asked to meet at the trailhead at 8:30 a.m. Activities will include a trash pick-up competition; an interpretive hike on the Ponderosa trail; trail maintenance; a coloring contest and a competition using ancient hunting tools. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each division.
Volunteers are then invited to stay for lunch. Smokey Bear is scheduled to make an appearance.
For additional information on the event, please contact Ed Hentcelt, recreation technician for the Williams Ranger District, at (928) 635-5660. All participants should arrive prepared with sturdy shoes, gloves, long-sleeved shirts and pants, sunglasses, sun block and water. For those who can assist with trail sign work, please bring a bike helmet.
National Trails Day is the only nationwide celebration of trails. The goal is to introduce people to the many joys and benefits of trails. Additional information on National Trails Day is available at the American Hiking Society website at www.americanhiking.org.
