WILLIAMS - After a series of earthquakes struck Haiti Jan. 12, many people have felt a need to help those affected by the disaster but have been unsure how best to contribute to relief efforts. In Williams, donations are being accepted at St. John's Episcopal-Lutheran Church.

Williams resident Merrick Spalding felt the call to help Haitians in need and has partnered with Williams Episcopal-Lutheran Church Rev. Anne Johnson to collect funds and non-perishable food items to be donated to relief agencies.

"I am just amazed and thrilled that Merrick listened to the prompting of his heart do something for the Haitian people," Johnson said. "St. Johns embraces the work that he's doing and we're glad to partner with him as a place that will receive the monetary donations. It's so much easier to send money and then organizations can use that to buy things at bulk at greatly reduced prices."

Johnson said monetary donations can be mailed to the church at 202 W. Grant. Donations will be collected until April 4. Checks should be made out to St. Johns Episcopal-Lutheran Church, with donations to a specific organization noted on the memo line. The church will then make out checks to the designated organizations.

Donations can also be made directly to the Episcopal Church's own relief agency.

"We have people on the ground in Haiti. We have an Episcopal Church presence there. We have an agency to send funds it to directly and our church actually has already taken up a collection that we will be sending to the Episcopal Relief Fund. Donations will all be going to a bona fide relief agency," said Johnson.

Non-perishable food item collection boxes are located at the Safeway in Williams.

Johnson said the local Haiti relief effort is another example of the overall generosity of the citizens of Williams.

"As usual, I am totally impressed with the generosity of the Williams community," she said. "They always come out with more money than you can even imagine even in hard times to help people, whether it's in the community or the world."
