Former Kaibab Learning Center employee pleads guilty to embezzlement
Norma Gomez to be sentenced Oct. 19
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Forty-year-old Norma Gomez, a former employee of the Kaibab Learning Center (KLC) located within the Grand Canyon National Park, pled guilty recently to one count of theft in regards to money taken from the South Rim daycare facility. The KLC is located next to the Grand Canyon Recreation Center within the national park. Gomez is accused of embezzling more than $55,000 from the local organization from as far back as 2006.
As part of an agreement between Gomez and federal prosecutors, Gomez's guilty plea will prevent her from working or volunteering in any capacity where she handles money. Restitution to the Kaibab Learning Center must also be paid, according to a press release. Flagstaff U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Mark E. Aspey accepted the guilty plea. Gomez's official sentencing will be held Oct. 19.
Board members with the Kaibab Learning Center issued the following statement Aug. 15.
"Though it has been difficult to deal with the fact that someone would do such a thing, Kaibab Learning Center is pleased that Norma Gomez has changed her plea to guilty. Due to diligent staff and board involvement, it was noticed that Mrs. Norma Gomez was not following procedures and law enforcement got involved. We appreciate Grand Canyon National Park investigators and the federal prosecutors that have moved forward with the case."
