Hiker Rescued from Sycamore Canyon near Winter Cabin
WILLIAMS - On the morning of Aug. 15, the Coconino County Sheriffs Office received a report of an injured hiker in the bottom of Sycamore Canyon, near Winter Cabin. The individual, 73-years-of age was on a two day hike with six other experienced hikers. The victim twisted her knee on Saturday evening while traversing the canyon bottom. The hikers slowly continued with the injured person and found a camp site near a possible landing zone for a rescue helicopter.
Later that evening, three members of the party began to hike out of Sycamore Canyon attempting to find a location with cell phone coverage to report the incident and request assistance. The hikers placed a 911 call at approximately 6 a.m. A Coconino County Deputy Sheriff responded to the trailhead as well as Guardian Medical Transport. The Coconino County Sheriffs SAR coordinator requested the Department of Public Safety Air Rescue helicopter out of Flagstaff to launch and determine an exact location and access a possible landing. DPS Air Rescue was able to locate the injured subject and land. The patient was then transported by DPS Air Rescue directly to Flagstaff Medical Center where she was treated for her injuries.
