Moonset pit open Saturday

The Kaibab National Forest is teaming up with local fire departments and the communities of Parks, Bellemont and Sherwood Forest Estates to open Moonset Pit for the 2010 season. On Saturday and Aug. 21, area residents can deposit forest debris such as tree limbs and pine needles from their private property at the cinder pit, which is located on National Forest land just west of the Parks community off old Route 66. The pit will also be open select dates through Oct. 16.

Fire personnel and community volunteers will staff the pit from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on open pit dates in order to ensure access and prevent disposal of unauthorized materials. Only natural, woody debris from private property can be deposited.

Illegal dumping at Moonset Pit has been a major problem. Pit abuses include dumping items other than natural, woody debris and dumping outside of the pit when the gate is closed. Please help us continue to offer this community service by using the pit appropriately.

Organizations with volunteers interested in hosting an open pit day should contact Sherwood Forest Estates Fire Chief Wayne Marx at (928) 607-3005 or Ray Raetzel at (928) 635-0059.
