Editorial: Clean up Williams on Saturday
The annual community spring cleanup day is Saturday. Cleanup volunteers are asked to report to the Williams-Forest Service Visitor Center parking lot, 200 W. Railroad Ave., at 9 a.m. Williams Clean and Beautiful volunteers will be on hand to assign areas needing attention. Free coffee and donuts will be available to all. Cash prizes will be hidden throughout town, so the more trash you collect the higher the likelihood you will be rewarded for your efforts. A group of volunteers will be targeting the Williams Cemetery.
The day ends at noon with a barbecue lunch featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and sodas. Arizona Public Service will cruise through town offering soda and water to volunteers.
Electronics pickup will be available 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Williams Rodeo Grounds. Grand Canyon Railway and Williams Clean and Beautiful have teamed with eGreen-IT Solutions, LLC to provide this service. eGreen will pickup electronic waste such as communications electronics, consumer electronics, electronic components, miscellaneous electronics and ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Televisions and CRTs will also be accepted - all free of charge.
Also on Saturday, old automotive tires will be accepted at the transfer station 9 a.m.-noon. No large truck or off-road tires will be accepted. All tires must be off the rims. During that time, CamDan Recycling will be on hand at the rodeo grounds collecting large and small appliances, auto batteries, tires and old newspapers. CamDan will purchase copper, aluminum, brass, electrical wire, electric motors, tin and steel in lengths of 4 inches or shorter, aluminum and steel auto wheels, transmissions drained of fluids, alternators, starters and engine blocks. For more information, call Dan at (760) 285-4879.
Through April 30, the city of Williams, in conjunction with Williams Clean and Beautiful, is picking up appliances at no cost. To schedule pickup, call city hall at (928) 635-4451. The appliance must be placed in front of your residence, as close to the curb as possible, but not in the street.
Cleanup day is made possible by American Legion Post No. 13, APS, CamDan Recycling, city of Williams, Holiday Inn of Williams, Jim Winbourn Landscaping, Pizza Factory, Pepsi, Red Garter Bed and Bakery, Superior Propane and the Williams Lions Club. We encourage all to participate in cleanup day in some way. And everyone doesn't necessarily have to go to cleanup day headquarters at the visitor center to participate. Clean up your own yard. Take down those Christmas lights. Help a neighbor. It doesn't take much time or effort to make our community a cleaner, more inviting place to visit.
