WILLIAMS - The Lady Vikings Volleyball squad had a busy schedule last week taking on both Camp Verde and Seligman. The Vikes took Camp Verde in four sets with scores of 15-12, 23-25, 25-14, and 25-16. Seligman fell in three sets with scores of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-8.

Despite the wins, Coach Jennifer Carter said the girls did not play the kind of volleyball they are capable of playing.

"You know, a win is a win. We're very happy that we won. It pushed us back up," Carter said. "We're still ranked third but we're at the point in the season, we only have four games left, so it's a lot of trying to keep the girls motivated, trying to keep their eyes on the prize. The games against Camp Verde and Seligman, they didn't play to the potential I would like them to play at, but we did come down with wins and I'm very happy with that."

Upcoming games against Grey Hills and Sedona will likely be the most challenging of the season for the Lady Vikes. Grey Hills is ranked second in the 2A North division standings just behind the Vikings, currently ranked number one.

The Lady Vikes lost to Sedona, a 3A school, earlier in the season. Although Sedona is not in the Vikes' division, Carter said the Lady Vikes could use the points garnered from a win against the bigger school to help bolster their ranking as they head towards the state finals.

"We need the points to stay up within the top eight teams so we can bypass that first round at State. We need to win. We need all the points we can get to keep us ranked at the top," Carter said.

The first round of State Final play takes place on Nov. 3. The eight top most ranked teams bypass the first round of play, instead playing their first game in the competition on Nov. 5.

"You could have a bad game at any time," Carter said. "You could play the team that's ranked 30th and lose so, definitely looking for that by."

The Lady Vikings take on Rough Rock at home tomorrow at 5 p.m. They travel to Sedona Oct. 20.
