Celebrate Fire Prevention Week

Oct. 4-10 is National Fire Prevention Week. The Williams Volunteer Fire Department is offering several classes to educate children on fire prevention.

Today, the WVFD will visit Head Start. Tomorrow firefighters will teach a health class at the Williams Middle School.

On Friday, WVFD firefighters are hosting an open house 6-8 p.m. at the fire station on Rodeo Road. Come meet the firefighters, sit in a fire engine and learn more about fire safety. The firefighters will be barbecuing hot dogs and hamburgers and serving soft drinks. The barbecue and open house are free to all.

On Oct. 13, Fire Prevention Specialist Bill Scott, will teach fire prevention through music at the Williams Senior Center. On Oct. 14, Scott will perform during three assemblies at the Williams Elementary-Middle School. Call WEMS at (928) 635-4428 for specific times. WVFD members encourage all children to attend an assembly on Oct. 14. Firefighters have invited Heritage Elementary School and welcome any homeschool children to attend.

There is no cost to attend the assemblies, which are funded by the WVFD's annual golf tournament.

Coyote Kid mixer Oct. 16

The Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors October mixer will be held 5-7 p.m. at Colors of the West and Coyote Kid, located at 210 W. Route 66.

Hosts for the evening are owners Mike and Jacque Besler. Come view all they offer to Williams while enjoying appetizers and salsa tasting. The 50/50 draw will benefit the William Community Holiday Dinner that will be held in December.

Teen dance Saturday

A pre-Halloween dance for teens age 13-19 will be held 8 p.m.-12 a.m. Saturday at the Williams Recreation Center, 301 W. Railroad Ave.

The cost is $4 per person. Wear a costume and admission is free. The dance is sponsored by Inspirations, city of Williams, Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce and the Williams Alliance.

Open Mic Night at American Flyer Coffee Co.

American Flyer presents an Open Mic Night 7-9 p.m. on Friday. Poetry, skits and music performances are encouraged. Sign up all week at American Flyer.

Transfer station closed Friday

The city of Williams Transfer Station will close at 11 a.m. on Friday. It will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with regular hours.

Moonset Pit open Saturday

Moonset Pit will be open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday. The pit will also be open Oct. 24.

The pit provides local residents the opportunity to dispose of natural forest debris, such as tree limbs and pine needles, for free and is supported by the Kaibab National Forest, local fire departments and the communities of Parks, Bellemont and Sherwood Forest Estates. Moonset Pit is located just west of parks on a dirt road just east of Spitz Springs, on the north side of old Route 66.

Items cannot be bagged. Remember, only natural forest debris will be accepted, no construction material or trash.

Prescribed burning topic of meeting

The Kaibab National Forest plans to host a town hall meeting at the Maine Consolidated School District in Parks to provide information about prescribed burning. The meeting will be held 6-7:30 p.m. on Oct. 19.

Fire officials will be present to address questions about pile burning and other prescribed burning projects. The meeting will be held in the gymnasium. The address of the school is 10 Spring Valley Rd., Parks. The public is encouraged to attend.

Recycle glass locally

A glass recycling area is now available at the Williams Transfer Station, thanks to several organizations and individuals. The glass recycling bin is located inside the transfer station with easy access for dropping off glass.

Glass recycling is available 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The transfer station is closed Sunday, Monday and posted holidays. Do your part and help make a difference by completing the circle - reduce, reuse and recycle.

Three Sisters Pit open on Saturday

Williams Volunteer Fire Department firefighters will open Three Sisters Pit 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. Three Sisters Pit is located a few miles north of Williams on Forest Road 124 (Country Club Road).

This community service is provided by the Kaibab National Forest in an effort to assist local residents in disposing of debris from defensible space projects. Fire department members will staff the pit. Only natural woody debris will be accepted. Items not accepted are garbage, dimension lumber and other building materials etc.

Enter big buck contest

The Williams Volunteer Fire Department and Ruff's Sporting Goods of Flagstaff are sponsoring a big buck contest. Proceeds from the contest will benefit Engine No. 3's restoration fund.

The cost to enter is $20 per person. Those that enter will receive discounted room rates and RV spaces.

The winner will receive a Weatherby Vanguard caliber of choice. The contest is open to all units south of Grand Canyon starting with youth hunts on Friday and ending with general rifle deer no later than Nov. 12. Entries must be made the day prior before the hunts begin.

Donate blood locally

In Williams, blood can be donated 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Williams High School gym, 440 S. Seventh St. A blood drive will be held 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Grand Canyon Rec Center in the multi-purpose room.

Ash Fork reunion planned for June

A committee has formed on Facebook to organize a reunion for all Ash Fork Schools alumni. The last Ash Fork All Schools Reunion was held in 2000. This reunion is scheduled for June 11-13 in Ash Fork.

The group profile is networked on Facebook.com and can be found by searching Ash Fork High School Reunion 2010. Here you can view the wall, create discussion topics, network with fellow alumni or receive updates.

The committee members are Beverly Girl, Robert Campbell, Karla Kratzenberg, Crystal Hadley and Kathy Startt. The committee is seeking volunteers and sponsors to help with organizing and promoting this event. Also needed is a local committee to form and organize the "Ash Fork's Got Talent Show." This reunion will rely on community and volunteer support .

Gently used coats needed

The Williams Kiwanis Club is seeking gently used coats to be distributed to area schools, the Williams Senior Center and the Williams Food Bank.

Gently used coats can be left at Gateway Cleaners or at any Kiwanis meeting at noon on Wednesdays. This is the fifth year the club has provided coats to the community. To date, 2,000 coats have been distributed.

Ladies Night Out Oct. 30

American Flyer Coffee Co. is reserving the last Friday of each month for Ladies Night Out/Scrapbooking session. The next Ladies Night will be held 6-11 p.m. on Oct. 30. American Flyer Coffee Cove is located at 326 W. Route 66.

Ladies are invited to bring their own scrapbooking supplies and projects to work with. American Flyer Coffee Co. will provide space and tables.

Vendors needed

Vendors are needed for the Holiday Craft Show, scheduled for Nov. 28. The craft show will be held at the Sultana Theater. Proceeds from the show will benefit the proposed animal holding facility in Williams. For more information on the event, call Nadine at (928) 863-0421.

Help symphony, tour homes

The Flagstaff Symphony Guild is hosting a home tour in Flagstaff 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 10. The tour includes six homes. The cost is $25 per person. This is a major fundraiser for the symphony. Historic photos wanted

The Williams Public Library and the Kaibab National Forest are working together to collect historic photos, slides or negatives of photos depicting Williams and the surrounding area.

On Oct. 17 and 24, Nov. 7 and 14 and Dec. 5 and 12, the Kaibab is going to set up a computer and scanner in the library to scan historic photos, negatives or slides. Once scanned, the photos will be housed in the library so they will be available for the public, historians or other researchers. Copies will be burned to a CD and given to the owner of the collection for their personal use.

If you have old photos, negatives or slides of Williams, Ash Fork, Parks, Valle, Tusayan, the Grand Canyon, or places in the forest such as Laws Spring or the top of Bill Williams Mountain, make an appointment to bring them in to be scanned. This is a great opportunity to save those old photos.

Slow down in school zones

The Williams Police Department reminds citizens to slow down in school zones. The WPD will be monitoring school zones heavily and will be citing anyone exceeding the speed limit in school zones.

GED, ELS classes offered

Coconino Community College will be offering ESL, English as a Second Language, classes Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 and GED-Prep classes Wednesday and Thursday evening from 5:30 to 8:30. CCC is located at 636 S. Seventh St. Call 635-1325 for more information.

School offers spirit bus for away games

Community members now have a ride to the Williams High School Vikings away games, thanks to the addition of a spirit bus. The bus will be available for out-of-town games scheduled for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The cost is $5 per person and does not include admission and food. The bus is available on a first come, first served basis.

While the bus is available to students and community members, all passengers must be freshman age or older. No junior high aged children will be allowed without parental supervision. Passengers will be segregated by gender.

Mini clocks available

A limited number of miniature town clocks are available for sale. The clocks are being sold to defray the cost of landscaping the area around the town clock, located at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Grand Canyon Boulevard.

The working miniature clocks are currently available for $250 each. Organizers say the clocks will not be ordered again. The miniatures were produced specifically for the Williams Town Clock project.

Historical photo available

The July 4 historical reenactment photo is available for sale online through the Williams-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce at williamschamber.com. The photos are also available at Cactus Canyon Old Time Photo and Shipping Depot, 120 W. Route 66.

Barrels, bins now available

The Williams Clean and Beautiful Committee is now selling rain barrels and compost bins. Rain barrels cost $40 and compost bins are $45.

Barrels and bins can be purchased at Williams Mountain Nursery, 225 W. Grant Ave., by asking for Carla. If paying by check, make it payable to Williams Clean and Beautiful.

The Williams Kiwanis Swap Meet is offered weekly Friday through Sunday. The swap meet is located at the west end of Williams next to the courthouse.

Fuelwood permits available

Permits for gathering dead and down firewood for personal use on the Williams Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest can be obtained for $5 per cord.

The minimum purchase is $20. Six cords per household is the maximum amount of wood that can be purchased per season. Firewood gathering season will be open through Dec. 13. Permits will be available weekdays at the following locations the Williams Ranger District, 742 S. Clover Hill Rd. 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. For more information, call (928) 635-5600.

Support available for cancer survivors

The Williams Area Cancer Survivors' Group offers support for cancer survivors, family members and caregivers the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Williams Health Care Center, 301. S. Seventh St.

Join Williams Group Fitness

Aerobics instructor Georgeanna Koenig offers aerobics at the Williams Health Care Center, 301 S. Seventh St.

She teaches light challenge classes each week from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and energizer classes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each week as well.

There is no charge for the classes, but donations are welcome.

Box tops needed

Box Tops for Education, a program sponsored by General Mills, remains under way locally. Collect box tops from General Mills products and Campbell's Soup labels and help purchase school supplies for classrooms at the Williams Elementary-Middle School.

On General Mills products, the words "Box Tops for Education" must appear or the labels are worth nothing. On Campbell's Soup labels, the UPC code must be present.

Women on the Move meet weekly

Women on the Move is open to all women dedicated to recovery and actively working any 12-Step Program. There are no dues or fees as the group is self-supporting through their own contributions. The group meets on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Walker Hall, St. John's Episcopal Lutheran Church, corner of Second and Grant in Williams. This is a non-smoking meeting. Find a job tomorrow

The Arizona Workforce Connection/Job Service hosts a weekly One-Stop employment assistance service Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. at the Williams Public Library. Resume workshops are also offered. The services are free and available to all.
