WILLIAMS - As education officials are forced to make painful cuts throughout the state of Arizona, officials closer to home are faced with their own tough decisions. School administrators with Coconino Community College are no different. Officials there said they plan to close the Williams campus throughout most of the 2009 summer.

The Williams campus will continue to operate Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to noon this summer, according to Williams-Grand Canyon campus administrator Cheryl Shirley. All other classes will be on hold for the summer. Shirley said that daily operations would cease May 14, though limited operations will resume on June 3. Daily operations are scheduled to resume Aug. 17, a week before the start of the fall semester. CCC officials said, meanwhile, that there are no plans to permanently close the facility.

Shirley said CCC officials would still check phone messages through out the summer months. The Williams CCC campus can be reached at (928) 635-1325.

"We're authorized to be open from 8 to noon on Wednesdays," Shirley said, adding that there are currently plans to hold a painter's studio on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. She said other classes, to be held on Wednesdays, are also in the works.

"We're working together with David Bixby, with the historical reenactment group, and we are planning on holding band camp. That would be starting also on June 3," Shirley said. The band camp would be held in conjunction with administrators at Williams High School.

Another workshop may be held for those interested in learning QuickBooks business-related software, though Shirley said she still looking for students who wish to sign up, adding that the class would be ideal for business owners, managers and anyone interested in learning about the software.

"We plan to organize the QuickBooks workshop some time this summer, but we need at least six students," Shirley said. "We've been directed by the president that we can be open from 8-noon on Wednesdays, so we're trying to get as many things working on Wednesdays as we can."

Shirley said that she is welcome to ideas from individuals in the community when it comes to possible classes at the Williams classes. A minimum of six students is required for a class to held, she said.

Construction on the Williams CCC campus began in May of 2002 and was completed around February of 2002. While a number of students have taken classes throughout the years, CCC officials said that only about six to eight students historically take classes during the summer months, all of which were adult education classes.
