Report evaluates forest management

WILLIAMS, Ariz. - The Kaibab National Forest has released a report that evaluates how management under the current forest Land and Resource Management Plan is affecting conditions and trends related to sustainability.

The report is another step in the process of revising the current forest plan to make it more adaptable to changes in social, economic and environmental conditions.

The recently-released report, known as the Comprehensive Evaluation Report, identifies four priority topics that will focus the scope of revising the current Kaibab National Forest plan. The topics reflect the priority needs and potential changes in program direction that will be emphasized in the revised forest plan. The topics are as follows:

• Modify stand structure and density toward reference conditions and restore historic fire regimes;

• Protect and regenerate aspen;

• Protect seeps, springs, ephemeral wetlands, and North Canyon Creek; and

• Restore grasslands by reducing tree encroachment in grasslands and meadows.

The report, additional information on the plan revision process, other revision documents and public participation opportunities are available on the Kaibab National Forest Web site (linked below).

Collaboration and public involvement related to the Kaibab National Forest's plan revision process have been ongoing for about two years. Many public comments on forest plan revision have already been received at public meetings and through email, phone calls and letters.

Comments on the Comprehensive Evaluation Report will be of most value if received by June 15. Written comments should be sent to Kaibab National Forest, Attn: Forest Plan Revision Team, 800 S. 6th St., Williams, AZ 86046; via email to; or by FAX to (928) 635-8208 with "Forest Plan Revision" in the subject line.
