Guest column: WAAG offers low-cost pet vaccinations Saturday

Ah, spring, when pet hair fills the air. And it's also time for the 24th Annual Williams Animal Action Group's Vaccination Clinic. Mark your calendars for Saturday from noon-3 p.m. at the rodeo barn, corner of Airport and Rodeo roads.

Here's the "menu" -

• For dogs, rabies, tags and certificate, $6, one- and three-year shots; distemper combo (adeno II, parvo, parainfluenza), one-year shot, $5; and bordetella (kennel cough), six-month, nasal spray, $5.

• For cats, rabies, one- and three-year, $6; distemper combo (leukemia, rhino, calici), one-year shot, $10.

• City licenses can be purchased for spayed and neutered dogs for $10. Please bring proof! Unaltered, fertile dog licenses can be purchased for $20. All dogs must be current on rabies to purchase a license. Please bring proof!

Every year the longest wait is at the dog rabies line. We're working hard to make the form filling go as quickly as possible by having extra volunteers at that table.

Here's what you can do to help! Please, please, please bring your old rabies certificate to the clinic. We can rapidly copy most of the identification information and update the vaccination date onto the new form. Go find these certificates now.

And you don't have to bring your dog in until the paperwork is done. That way we won't have a long line of nervous dogs and owners eyeing each other. We'll also have fewer "code browns" and "code yellers!"

However, if it is hot or sunny, you won't be able to leave your pet in a hot vehicle. Another person can be walking the dog or if you live close by, you can go home and fetch them back.

If your dog's rabies shot hasn't expired (remember the first rabies shot is good for one year and after that they are good for three years) you can go directly to the WAAG table. We have all the cat shots and the dogs' yearly shots there. The WAAG table has the shortest line and it moves fast. But we do not have dog rabies vaccinations there.

Here are some other things you can do to help -

• Bring small bills so that we don't get low on change.

• Make sure your dogs are on leashes and your cats are in carriers. We have these to loan out at the door.

• Do not bring any sick pets. A sick animal cannot safely be vaccinated and the vet, Dr. Baker, will not be able to do any exams.

• We need old but clean towels and blankets for the WAAG Spay and Neuter Program. Please bring those donations to the clinic and we'll have a table to set them on.

Now is the time to thank the large group of northern Arizona communities who have supported WAAG's work all these decades. Thank you, volunteers, board members, clients, donors, veterinarians, animal control officers, the Williams-Grand Canyon News and the city of Williams. A big thanks to neighbors referring and educating neighbors about our services. We don't do this alone!

See you Saturday, noon-3 p.m. at the rodeo barn. For more information, call me at (928) 635-2595.
